WHAT AND WHY?

Girls Rock Camp is a week-long music camp for girls (ages 11-18), featuring instrument instruction, workshops, and a Showcase Concert. Registration information under "How to Apply!" below! If you want to print out this information, click here.

WHEN?

July 12th - 16th, 2010

            Schedule:
            Monday-Thurday             9am-5pm
Friday                              9am-3pm; Showcase concert at AS220 in Providence, 7pm

WHERE?

JamStage music complex and practice space is located at 25 Esten Ave. in Pawtucket, RI, less than 5 miles from downtown Providence off of I-95.  Their facility was created specifically for musicians.  Each room is soundproofed, and includes professional musical equipment, as well as the ability to record practices.  JamStage also has… you guessed it!  A stage!  With great lights and a professional sound system.  We think you will enjoy your rock experience there quite a bit!  For more info visit www.jamstage.net.

WHO?

Any girl, age 11-18, can sign up for Girls Rock Camp.  NO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.  You don't even have to bring your own instrument, but feel free to do so if you like (and let us know if you do!).  Girls Rock! Rhode Island welcomes campers who identify as female, trans, and gender non-conforming.

HOW MUCH?

Tuition for the week is on a sliding scale of $250 - $500, with full and partial financial aid available for those who wish to apply for it.  We ask that campers pay what they can and please keep in mind that your contribution to Girls Rock Camp helps to make our programming a reality!  Can you afford to pay more?  If you can contribute more than the basic tuition amount, Girls Rock! Rhode Island will enthusiastically accept your generous donation.  Whether you can give $5 more or $5,000 more, every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated!  Any contribution amount above $500 is tax deductible.  If you are not receiving financial aid, payment is due by June 25th, 2010.  Please contact for more information.

WHAT HAPPENS AT GIRLS ROCK CAMP?

Instrument Instruction
Participants choose one instrument to focus on for the week.  The choices are drums, bass, guitar, or vocals.  The instruction is led by experienced and enthusiastic women musicians, and happens in small group lessons.  All levels of experience are welcome, from “never played music before” to “I've been playing for a few years” to “I play guitar in my band but I’ve always wanted to play drums”.

Workshops
Throughout the weekend, workshops are held on a variety of topics, from Screenprinting/Making Band Art to Songwriting (it’s not as hard as you might think!).  Other possible topics: How to Book a Show; History of Women Who Rock; Self-Defense; Zine-making; and Self-Esteem Building.  Feel free to express your workshop preferences or suggest a topic on the registration form.  If we can pull it off, we’ll offer it.

Band Practice
On the first day, everyone forms bands in a way that is fun, not scary.  The bands have band practice every day.  During band practice, band members work together to write a song, and practice playing as an ensemble.  Band coaches help bands with the writing process, facilitate the rehearsals, and answer questions as necessary (“How do I tune this thing?”,  “We have two parts, how do we fit them together?”, etc.).  On Friday night, everyone performs their songs at the big Girls Rock Camp all-ages Showcase Concert, which will be held at the JamStage Theater.

Fun Activities
At Rock Camp, we know how to have a good time.  The camp day is interspersed with fun stuff, from warm-up games to making buttons with your band name.

CAPACITY AND ADMISSIONS POLICY

Space at this session is limited to 30 participants.  Girls Rock Rhode Island will work to have a diverse representation of campers.  Acceptance to Girls Rock Camp is decided by committee, and is based on space, age, financial need, musical background, and more. If you don’t make the first 30, we will keep a waiting list of 15 participants, and you will be notified immediately is someone drops out.  If you wanted to attend this session, but weren't accepted, you will be at the top of the list for next session’s Girls Rock Camp!

ACCEPTANCE CONFIRMATION

We will confirm that we have received your application shortly after we receive it.  We will notify you of acceptance via email or telephone by June 7th, 2010.  For those who are not receiving a full scholarship, payment will be required by June 25th.

If you need to cancel after sending in your registration, please notify the office right away.  If you would like a refund, you must cancel IN WRITING.  If you cancel before June 28th we will refund 50% of your payment.  If you cancel after June 28th we cannot refund your payment.
